How Does It Work

The SpiderMed Sound for a Straight Back and a Flat Stomach is a small device that informs you whenever you need to straighten up and pull your stomach in. Correct posture relies on precisely these two factors: the back muscles and the abdominal muscles. SpiderMed for a Straight Back and a Flat Stomach will help you to build up your back and abdominal muscles and work out appropriate habits.

Wear the SpiderMed on your back and stomach, and whenever you start slouching or push your stomach out, you will immediately hear a beep. You should then straighten up and pull your stomach in.

What are the top benefits of using a SpiderMed? First of all it effectively straightens the back – turning the correct posture into a habit – thus oxygenating the body properly. It also has a fantastic effect on external appearance. In addition, the device strengthens the back and abdominal muscles and eliminates back pain, significantly improving your everyday comfort.

How To Use It

  • Put your hands through the straps so that the plastic part with the electronic module rests centrally between your shoulder blades. If necessary, adjust the straps’ length to fit your body shape. Straps must never be too tight or too loose.
  • SpiderMed will produce a beep and remind you to return to the correct posture the moment you start slouching. SpiderMed does not force the user into keeping a correct posture – rather, it uses its’ elastic straps to turn correct posture into a habit.
  • The key to success is to adjust the straps’ length – if they are ill-fitting, the beeps will sound at the wrong time and thus defeat the purpose.

1. How often should I use a SpiderMed?

It is recommended to wear the device 2 to 3 times a day for about 10 to 15 minutes each time – for e.g. while watching TV, working on the computer or doing homework. SpiderMed can already be used by school-age children.

2. How does a SpiderMed influence correct posture?

SpiderMed does not force the user into a correct posture – rather, it teaches the user to turn correct posture into a habit and it exercises the muscles. The device beeps or vibrates to inform the user that they are slouching and should return to the correct posture. It is all about the user’s self-discipline.

3. What is the difference between a SpiderMed, a straight holder, an orthopedic corset, and an orthosis?

SpiderMed is neither of these. A straight holder forces the user to keep an upright posture, while the SpiderMed teaches this behavior and turns it into a habit as well as exercises the muscles. It beeps or vibrates whenever you start slouching – but that’s only to remind you to keep a correct posture.

The device is not an orthosis because it should not be used for, say, a broken collarbone. It certainly is not an orthopedic corset, often used in post-traumatic rehabilitation. SpiderMed is particularly recommended for children and adolescents, when the spine is still ‘elastic’ – meaning, it’s prone to defects but ones that can still be corrected.

4. Will a SpiderMed help my child improve their bad posture?

Combating bad posture in children and adolescents requires extensive action. SpiderMed is one of the elements that will help to improve bad posture; outdoor exercise and physical activity, more generally, are also very important. We encourage you to do sports and to try SpiderMed, but ensure your child maintains a proper posture while sitting at the computer, at a desk, on a chair, etc. In order to be effective you have to be consistent in doing sports as well as wearing a SpiderMed.

5. Can I deceive a SpiderMed?

The key to success is to fit the device correctly on your back and carry it like you would carry a backpack. If the straps are adjusted and fit properly around the lower part of your shoulder blades then the device will not ‘wander’ up your back. The straps should fit tightly but never to the point of causing the user any discomfort while wearing the SpiderMed. Provided the straps are properly adjusted then you won’t be able to cheat the device.

6. Is the sound annoying?

The sound produced by the SpiderMed Sound is similar to a chirping bird. Not everyone would describe this as a comforting sound, especially if it’s repeated many times a day. That’s why we created a more subtle version of the SpiderMed Sound – the Vibrating SpiderMed, which informs the user about their faulty posture by vibrating, with no sound.

7. Are there any diseases where wearing a SpiderMed is a recommended course of action?

Yes, there are such diseases. According to the opinion of the Children’s Memorial Health Institute in Warsaw: ‘Using the SpiderMed is particularly recommended for use in the treatment of Scheuermann's disease and other spinal deformities manifested by a round back. Due to the common occurrence of spinal deformities in children, the device should be widely used to prevent posture defects.’

8. Are there any contraindications for wearing a SpiderMed?

Yes, there are such contraindications. SpiderMed is not recommended for children diagnosed with scoliosis and any doubts should be cleared with a doctor. According to the opinion of the Children’s Memorial Health Institute: ‘We do not recommend the use of SpiderMed by children with lateral spinal curvature and permanent stiffness within thoracic kyphosis.’

Thoracic kyphosis relates to the concavity of the chest which is the result of slouching over a prolonged period of time, and which will not be cured by the SpiderMed. The device works when the spine is still ‘elastic’ and the changes can still be reversed.
